LAKESHORE DRIVE: Living The Funk EP (2012)

Living the funk? James Brown lived the funk and frankly there was a fair amount of drugs, wife-beating and jail involved. I think it’s safe to assume however that Lakeshore Drive’s Living The Funk EP is a celebration of the music invented by the big man than the more questionable elements of his lifestyle. The title track is a tight little slice of programmed instrumental breakbeat funk with a nod to…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

VARIOUS: Jalapeno Funk Vol. 4 (2012) + DJ Moneyshot “Rob Resurrected’ free downloadFor Jalapeno Funk Vol. 4, UK label Jalapeno draw together the disparate elements of the funky end of the bass music scene by assembling a motley crew of eleven artists and getting them to contribute something modern and funk-related (both originals and remixes as well as previously released stuff and exclusives), for this fifteen tracker.
Eleven artists but fifteen tracks? That must mean some people have…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

TOM DRUMMOND: Rock The Rhythm EP (BBP045) (2012)

TOM DRUMMOND: Rock The Rhythm EP (2012)
Oz beat fiend Tom Drummond’s latest is the Rock The Rhythm EP on which he delivers four cuts that buck current ghetto funk trends by daring to venture into the sub-120 bpm arena. Below 120 bpm? Good god – you might as well be sat down for that right? If your answer’s ‘yes’ then think again as TD turns Tags’ obscure psych-funk version of Get Out My Life Woman into a 105 bpm funky breaks bump and unites it with a dash of Jurassic 5’s…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

TREMENDO Vol. 1: Various (2011)

TREMENDO Vol. 1: Various (2011)
Telephunken drops the first release on his own label Tremendo here and its eight floor fillers from across the ghetto funk/ funky breaks spectrum from the likes of his own bad self, Stickybuds, The Captain, Tom Drummond, Bobby C Sound TV, Bryx, The Breakbeat Junkie and Ursula 1000. Basically there’s ammunition here for virtually every style of breaks dj occasion: you’ve got your old-school flavoured cuts like Breakbeat Junkie’s Neneh Cherry-sampling Take A Stance…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

CMC & SILENTA: Roca Records presents Feature Breaks Vol. 2 (2011)

CMC & SILENTA: Roca Records presents Feature Breaks Vol. 2 (2011)
Second release in CMC & Silenta’s Feature Breaks series on their Roca imprint and they’ve opened up their back catalogue for remixing. It has to be said that this could be tantamount to handing a nutter some garden shears and getting your wedding tackle out, depending on who you’ve got on remix duties. Never fear though, half the ghetto funk universe were already …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

MANMADE RECORDS: Gold Edition - 2010

MANMADE RECORDS: Gold Edition - 2010
Old funk, nufunk, ghettofunk, blue funk – Dr Seuss would have a field day as we live through the most amusing genre-name wars since the old trip-hop vs. blunted beats conflict of the mid-nineties. All that aside, Manmade celebrate their tenth release with some 24 carat action in the form of a double vinyl EP – you know that’ll be cut loud …READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

MANMADE RECORDS: Feature Funk Vol. 6

MANMADE RECORDS: Feature Funk Vol. 6
And I thought August was supposed to be a slack month for music. You know how it is – artists and the public alike off at festivals indulging in free love and expensive drugs (if not expensive love and free drugs) and nobody seeing any point in releasing anything until September restores sanity. Apparently not this August though for Manmade deliver volume 6 of their ongoing Feature Funk series and its another good-time, floor-filling package of bootlegs from the cheesier end of the nu-funk spectrum. What you get is hands-in-the-air, big-club breakbeat restylings of Hit The Road Jack, The Velvelettes He Was Really Saying Something, a very cheeky use of The Mohawks Beat Me Til I’m Blue by CMC & Silenta plus a frankly Brie-tinged (or similarly aromatic Lithuanian equivalent) appropriation of Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water…READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

GOODGROOVE: Regrooved Series XI

GOODGROOVE: Regrooved Series XI
It’s refix time again and while the original versions of the tracks on here might have been around the block a few times that doesn’t prevent the dirty foursome assembled by the Goodgroove label giving them various kinds of ‘extreme makeover.’ Somehow I suspect the inspirational drug of choice during the making of these was MDMA. Except for The Captain who obviously…READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM
