SLYNK: Ghetto Funk presents Slynk EP (2011)

SLYNK: Ghetto Funk presents Slynk EP (2011)
The Ghetto Funk label’s ‘artist series’ of wax EPs continues apace and next up is Oz producer Slynk whose four-tracker sees the light of day early in the new year. The Brisbane-based dj/ producer dips into seventies and eighties disco and soul and nineties rapapellas (Q Tip and Screechy Dan for example) to keep it as resolutely upbeat as its predecessors. Lest that make it sound like…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

CMC & SILENTA: Funky Town (2011)

CMC & SILENTA: Funky Town (2011)
Manmade Records’ big boss men, CMC and Silenta have just dropped this party cut on their other label Roca which revolves around the old Banbarra Shack Up beat made famous by (among others) Stetsasonic on Talkin’ All That Jazz. This is the fastest I’ve ever heard it used though and it triggers the bpm radar at a nu funkin 127 bpm or thereabouts. Keeping up is MC Penny wryly observing, “Too sick, comin’ through with my toothpick/ Any style old school, except on the new shit,” among the…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

MANMADE RECORDS: Gold Edition - 2010

MANMADE RECORDS: Gold Edition - 2010
Old funk, nufunk, ghettofunk, blue funk – Dr Seuss would have a field day as we live through the most amusing genre-name wars since the old trip-hop vs. blunted beats conflict of the mid-nineties. All that aside, Manmade celebrate their tenth release with some 24 carat action in the form of a double vinyl EP – you know that’ll be cut loud …READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

GOODGROOVE: Regrooved Series XI

GOODGROOVE: Regrooved Series XI
It’s refix time again and while the original versions of the tracks on here might have been around the block a few times that doesn’t prevent the dirty foursome assembled by the Goodgroove label giving them various kinds of ‘extreme makeover.’ Somehow I suspect the inspirational drug of choice during the making of these was MDMA. Except for The Captain who obviously…READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

MANMADE: Feature Funk Vol. 3

MANMADE: Feature Funk Vol. 3
The next instalment of mental mash-up mayhem from Manmade with Javier Morillas, Slynk and D*Funk all taking a disco-influenced approach this time around - although it all sounds suspiciously like they’re trying to ‘house’ you. This means it’s up to label bosses CMC & Silenta to wheel out the heavy artillery with…READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

MANMADE: Feature Funk Vol. 2

MANMADE: Feature Funk Vol. 2
The second in today’s brace of mash-up science 12"s, in truth this has been out a short minute already as swift glance at the MB chart for October will reveal with the Slynk track at number ten. And in hindsight that’s languishing way too low. It is the jewel in the crown of this EP and with it Brisbane's Slynk takes sixties-diva Mavis Staples’ soul torch song slowy You’re The Fool, drops in a bit of the ‘Stones, some dialogue from what I think is Beat Street then – as if you hadn’t already guessed – ups the bpms and adds a rather large breakbeat. The other tracks don’t fuck around either.
