BIG M presents: THE BREAKBEAT JUNKIE vs. DJP (2012)
Funky breaks dream team The Breakbeat Junkie and DJP hook-up again and cook up some new heat for the Big M label – three joint efforts and DJP’s solo banger Say Word. I’m always a sucker for party hip-hop so it’s the latter that takes my fancy the most with its inspired employment of Treacherous Three and solo Spoonie G vocals. You can’t get much more old school than that and the results sound like the kind of hook-laden feel-good track that seems perpetually just beyond People Under The Stairs grasp. Nice one DJP. The remaining three…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

BBP: The Freak Hop EP (2011)

BBP: The Freak Hop EP (2011)
It says here that the ‘freak hop’ concept was invented by long time Badboe cohort Prosper. ‘Freak hop’, in case you were wondering, seems to be like a mash-up for those with terminal ADHD since it involves combining not two or even three previously recorded tracks but as many as can possibly be crammed into between 4 to six minutes. Didn’t that used to be called a…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

MANMADE RECORDS: Gold Edition - 2010

MANMADE RECORDS: Gold Edition - 2010
Old funk, nufunk, ghettofunk, blue funk – Dr Seuss would have a field day as we live through the most amusing genre-name wars since the old trip-hop vs. blunted beats conflict of the mid-nineties. All that aside, Manmade celebrate their tenth release with some 24 carat action in the form of a double vinyl EP – you know that’ll be cut loud …READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

THE BREAKBEAT JUNKIE & DJP: Goodgroove Artist Series no. 10

THE BREAKBEAT JUNKIE & DJP: Goodgroove Artist Series no. 10
Bath’s Goodgroove label lives up to it’s name once more and shows hip-hop producers the way back to the dancefloor. The recipe is simple, take one old school hip-hop acapella circa 1985, take one old funk loop circa 1967-1975, forgo the tired ‘dusty breaks’-re-creation-of-1992-approach and instead apply muscular 21st century club vibe instead. Retaining the breakbeat (correctly) it also chucks in a few house-production flourishes. Not the shit vocoder-vocals, cheesy electro synths of…READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM
