UGLY DUCKLING: 'Elevation' official video + free download (2012)

RATING: 5/5
Boom! Everyone’s favourite cartoon old-school hip-hop crew, Ugly Duckling, finally release the long overdue video to Elevation – the dancefloor-banger highlight of their fifth and latest LP Moving At Breakneck Speed. Made with the intention of bringing the album’s Looney-Tunes style cover art to life expect to see...READ FULL POST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

BLOWN CELEB: 1000 Screaming Kamikaze’s (2012)

BLOWN CELEB: 1000 Screaming Kamikaze’s (2012)
You might not have heard of rappers Swiss Precise and Jon E Rockwell who together form Blown Celeb but you’ll almost certainly have heard of Rockwell from his day job as Dizzy Dustin of Long Beach’s old school party hip-hop crew Ugly Duckling. Blown Celeb is Dizzy’s side project and 1000 Screaming Kamikaze’s (let’s not talk about that apostrophe right now) is their debut album. Many will know of UD’s nearly two decades long pursuance of true school tenets in the face of commercialisation so it will come as no surprise that Blown Celeb are similarly minded. What might come as a surprise however, is Blown Celeb’s sound and lyrics – don’t go expecting…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

UGLY DUCKLING: Moving At Breakneck Speed (2011)

UGLY DUCKLING: Moving At Breakneck Speed (2011)
RATING: 5/5
Proof that three really is the magic number as Long Beach trio Ugly Duckling return with their fifth studio album Moving At Breakneck Speed. In their eighteen-or-so year career Andy C, Dizzy Dustin and Young Einstein have outlasted peers like Jurassic 5 and latterly maintained a higher worldwide profile than other West Coast underground acts they came up with like People Under The Stairs, Dilated Peoples, Foreign Legion, and Quannum as well as the further afield but musically closer DJ Format and Abdominal. In fact they give every sign of having the staying power of another goofy rap trio from even further back in the day who also released a studio LP this year……READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

FEATURECAST: Ghetto Funk presents Featurecast EP (2011)

FEATURECAST: Ghetto Funk presents Featurecast EP (2011)
RATING: 5/5
Nowadays I normally wouldn’t bother bigging up a Ghetto Funk label release as it’s difficult to blow your trumpet louder than they blow their own. For starters, there’s the whole name thing. ‘Ghetto funk’ was their idea and it wasn’t the first applied to the artists working in the genre but now it’s the most widely used. Then there’s the fact that in the space of a year, they’ve acquired most of the major players in the genre as part of their ‘crew.’ There’s also the fact that

UGLY DUCKLING: New LP title ‘Moving At Breakneck Speed’ announced - 2011
Long Beach crew Ugly Duckling will be back in 2011 with a new LP entitled Moving At Breakneck Speed. The release date has not yet been decided but rapper Andy Cooper was kind enough to let Monkeyboxing.com preview three tracks off the new album this week. The monkey is under strict instructions to keep the tracks themselves on the downlow but we can tell you that they are called, Keep Movin’, Elevation and Sprint. Speaking of the LP in the recent…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

UGLY DUCKLING: The interview – 2010

UGLY DUCKLING: The interview 2010
Underground legends Ugly Duckling have been delivering consistently excellent, funky, sample-based hip-hop since the early nineties and have a discography totalling no fewer than four studio LPs. The three-man outfit comprising of two MCs (Andy Cooper and Dizzy Dustin) and one DJ (Young Einstein) are favourites with club DJs for bangers such as ‘Just A Little Samba’and ‘Turn It Up’ and also justly famous for their upbeat live performances which have garnered them a hugely loyal fanbase. Having toured the world extensively over the last couple of years promoting their last LP ‘Audacity’, UD only recently returned to their native Long Beach, California. They were probably expecting a rest or something but monkeyboxing was hammering on their doors (or at least their inbox) having heard the rumour (largely started by UD themselves, on their own website) that there was a new LP in the works. Run to ground, UD were actually good enough to give us the 411 on the trials of touring, the new album, and Dizzy’s record label Kamikazi Airlines as well as – er – Andy C’s encounter with the hounds of hell in England, and why Einstein had to be carried onto the plane in Ireland:

UGLY DUCKLING: Live at Bristol Thekla – 9 January 2009
I went to see Ugly Duckling last night and as shows go it was unusual enough to prompt me to share a few pointers about enhancing your gig-going experience and in particular your Ugly Duckling gig-going experience, should you find yourself at a UD gig on their current tour to promote new LP Audacity (Read monkeyboxing.com review of Audacity).
1. Firstly, going up to MC Dizzy Dustin in the crowd before the show, shaking his hand and having a quick chat is all acceptable, as is enquiring into the possibility of an interview after the show. He’s very friendly and amenable.
2. Knocking a pint over on the table next to where Dizzy is sat so that it pours into his lady friend’s boot causing her to remove the boot in order to pour it out again, is both clumsy and embarrassing and should be avoided if at all possible…READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

When Wile-E-Coyote inadvertently (and inevitably) runs off cliffs in his admirable but continually doomed pursuit of Roadrunner he still always manages to cover a few yards after the ground has run out. NEWS: UGLY DUCKLING announce new LP Audacity
Ugly Duckling have announced that they are shortly to release their new album Audacity. This latest LP has been two years in the making and the band said yesterday in a myspace bulletin that they would soon be adding new album tracks to their myspace site's music player and that the Won't Let It Die video is imminent. They referred to themselves in the same bulletin as the "whitest/nerdiest/" and most old school group since the Native Tongues era, humbly omitting to acknowledge their general dope-ness. Last time the Monkey spoke to DJ Einstein on the Bang For The Buck tour he mumbled something about, "We might do another one" when asked about future album plans. Fans will be relieved that there is no longer any question about this. Audacity will be Ugly Duckling's
P.S. Don't forget to check out Dizzy's side project Blown Celeb.
