THE GRITS: Make A Sound (Like James Brown)/ Yeah No (2013)

The Grits have a new 45 out and it’s called Make A Sound (Like James Brown). And we all know what that means, right? Owwwwww! Good god! Hah! Let me hear it now! Huh! Do it! Funk-y! Uhh! That’s right – it means gritty, psychedelic funk and vocalist Sophie Adler Mckean is on hand again to give the music invented by the late, great JB a swinging London vibe. Appropriately enough we wait until the band take it to the bridge before we …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

THE GRITS: Black Sambuca (2012)

Brighton funk crew The Grits continue to broaden their horizons with new single Black Sambuca. Earlier this year they employed their first vocalist for the storming double header of Sonics cover Strychnine backed with Funky Mile. This time around it’s a sitar funk instrumental. And not just any old sitar funk instrumental but one named for the most evil alcoholic beverage known to man. Black Sambuca (the drink) is black by name, nearly...READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

THE GRITS: Strychnine/ (I’d Walk) A Funky Mile (2012)

RATING: 5/5 It’s been a while since the last drop from The Grits but proper funk filth takes a while to cook up and both cuts on this 45 are pure dirt. A-side garage rock cover Strychnine lays down an stop-starty, itching, scratching line of poison that should see off the deluded who keep insisting that MOR acid jazz is ‘deep funk’ while the super-heavy groove of B-side (I’d Walk) A Funky Mile – all…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM
