THE BAMBOOS: Medicine Man (2012)

Once upon a time, The Bamboos were a largely instrumental retro-funk outfit. However, successive LPs have seen them inching steadily towards a more accessible sound by increasing their vocal numbers, expand their generic repertoire beyond the boundaries of funk and become increasingly slick in the production department. Like furtive pop slags. Does fifth LP Medicine Man mark a return to channelling some raw-ass bayou-funk juju or is the medicine man now working for big pharma? Let’s have a gander:…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

A huge hip-hop tune from Aldo Vanucci, Featurecast and Tha ‘Liks, some big funk bangers from the likes of Funkshone and the Bamboos but it’s definitely been a reggae kind of year. Here’s some you should have got your hands on in 2010……READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

THE BAMBOOS: You Ain’t No Good – 2010 – Single review + video
RATING: 5/5
Second single off The Bamboos fourth studio LP 4, You Ain’t No Good is also the second big mod-soul stomper this month what with Kid British’s Winner out in a week or so. So who ain’t no good? Certainly not mysterious Tongan King Merc whose sterling vocals come on like Al Green meeting Paul Weller. Possibly it’s

THE BAMBOOS: On The Sly (feat. Kylie Auldist) – 2009 – Single review + Video
RATING: 5/5
A well-deserved full marks for On The Sly (LISTEN/ WATCH below) as The ‘Boos get downright sexy with this massive slice of super-heavy funk-slink punctuated by colossal hammond stabs and fronted by an ultra-sultry Kylie Auldist who trounces her own last single with ease. But enquiring minds want to know - is Auldist

THE BAMBOOS - Amen Brother/ Tears Cried (feat. Kylie Auldist) - 2008 - Single review 5 NOVEMBER 2008

THE BAMBOOS - Amen Brother/ Tears Cried (feat. Kylie Auldist) - 2008 - Single review
RATING: 5/5
The onset of winter is depressing as shit isn't it? Long nights, bitter mornings, ice on your toilet seat...what you need is an upbeat, uptempo slice of summery organ-based funk. Amen Brother is precisely what you'll cry, then, when you hear the A side of this new Bamboos bomb. Nobody likes someone who's too happy though! Christ what a pain in the ass! Thus...(READ MORE @ MONKEYBOXING.COM)

THE BAMBOOS – King of the Rodeo (feat. Megan Washington)/ I Can’t Help Myself (feat. Ty) – 2008 – Single review
RATING: 5/5
Since the Kings of Leon are now shit perhaps the best thing to do with them is cover one of their songs and transform it from a tuneless guitar dirge into a sprightly funk track. As luck would have it, this is precisely what The Bamboos have done on the A-side with the aid of the angel-voiced Megan Washington. Then, seeing as they’re on a roll, they invite London rapper Ty to leap aboard and lay waste to what’s left of the dancefloor with I Can’t Help Myself - the sort of track that people dance to in the street if you drive past and you’re just playing it in your car. And I know because that happened yesterday when I was driving. So there.
Out now on Tru Thoughts.
