STONED SOUL PICNIC – One Dollar Hotel (Parts 1 & 2) – 2007 – 7" Single review
RATING: 5/5
The funk buyers at my normal record sources must have been sleeping on the job or something when this little gem came out as I only came across it by chance whilst trawling the internet. This is the band’s first release since last year’s solid The Erotic Cakes of Stoned Soul Picnic LP. Part 1 is low-and-slow vintage-sounding instrumental funk saturated in squalling wah-wah guitar and JD’s trademark Hammond sound while Part 2 downplays the guitar and organ pyrotechnics in favour of a dirty great reverbed-out drum break. Consequently you get two tracks as filthy and sleazy as anything you’d expect in a one dollar hotel and begging to be abused. Plus, if you buy it via the band’s myspace it’ll only cost you a fiver! My advice – play loud at every opportunity.
Out now on Raw Wax.
