THE BONGOLIAN: Bongos For Beatniks (2011)

THE BONGOLIAN: Bongos For Beatniks (2011)
If The Incredible Bongo Band were British and had formed in the late sixties instead of the early seventies…they still wouldn’t have sounded like this. You’d be closer if you tried to imagine the love child of Roy Budd’s Get Carter theme and the tripped-out psychedelia of sixties French nutter Pierre Henri. That’s not to say that The Bongolian himself, Nasser Bouzida, is any the less funky as a result for (as with previous releases) this fourth studio album, Bongos For Beatniks is as rich in crisply syncopated percussion as its predecessors. Hang on a minute – Nasser Bouzida? Isn’t he in UK mod-funk legends Big Boss Man?…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

BIG BOSS MAN: Full English Beat Breakfast – 2009 – Album review

BIG BOSS MAN: Full English Beat Breakfast – 2009 – Album review
HIGHLIGHTS: Triumph Of The Olympian – C’est Moi – Clown Face – Pies & Pastiche – The Bloater
SOUNDBITE: “Made you look like a clown/ Got your smile upside down”
RATING: 5/5
‘Difficult third album’ my arse. What’s surprising about mod-funk legends Big Boss Man is that; given the quality of critically acclaimed LPs number one and two (Humanize (2001) and Winner (2005) respectively), and having soundtracked Mighty Boosh film-short “Sweet” and having their track Party 7 used on the 2006 Nike World Cup advert, they don’t have a higher profile in the UK and U.S. After all, here is a band that ranks with the cream of the new funk scene

BIG BOSS MAN: Full English Beat Breakfast LP - September 2009 release

BIG BOSS MAN: Full English Beat Breakfast LP - September 2009 release
(PRESS RELEASE) The long awaited third album from Big Boss Man; Full English Beat Breakfast is released from September 2009.
Recorded by the band at their 8-track ramshackle studio, the album was mixed by Nick Terry (Klaxons, SMD) at Studio 2 at The Premises, Hackney, London. As usual the band have made good use of their extensive collection of vintage (and temperamental) gear for Full English Beat Breakfast. Head honcho Nasser (a.k.a the Bongolian) plays mini-VIP, Farfisa and Hammond organs, Wurlitzer piano, Moog synths and drums and percussion. Driving bass beat and fuzz guitar is provided by bassman Scott Milsom "the Hawk" and guitarist Trev Harding. The band have once again created a superb spaced-out selection of prime 60’s inspired dance floor tracks:…READ THE REST AT MONKEYBOXING.COM

THE HAWK: Electric Boogaloo ('Listen Outside The Box' LP promo single) Free download/ Video
RATING 5/5
The tinny treble frequencies of those with ‘too-loud’ walkman headphones that used to bother the respectable train traveller have long been superseded by spotty hooded youths who eschew headphones completely and rape the ears of all and sundry with the tinny treble frequencies of their mobile phones. Older commuters must look with misty-eyed fondness on the days when the ghetto blaster was king and their breakfast-filled bowels were loosened by thunderous bass. Coincidentally, it is to this era that new Hawk track Electric Boogaloo harks back

THE HAWK - Interview – 2008

THE HAWK - Interview – 2008
Hasn't Scott Milsom got enough music in his life? Bassist for mod-funk legends Big Boss Man, bassist for low-down dirty punks Coffin Nails, one half of hip-hop duo The Cookers, the man behind Funky Ass Records and the Dog House Music recording studio and a solo beats artist (as The Hawk) in his own right - latest single Run Rudeboy has already scored airtime from Steve Lamacq. Monkeyboxing felt it was time to hook up with The Hawk to get the rundown on rudeboys runnin':
Monkeyboxing (MB): You must be have been pretty stoked with Steve Lamacq playing the new single?
The Hawk (TH): Yeah, if you ignore their daytime shows, the BBC has got some great DJs, that actually know about music. Nerm also played my tune ‘Puppets’on the BBC Asian Network (because of it’s Japanese flavours) and Rob Da Bank played ‘Candy Dream Dub’ on his Radio 1 show The Blue Room. It’s a great feeling to hear your tunes on a national radio station.
MB: That's not the first time he's played your stuff though is it?
TH: That’s the first Hawk track Steve Lamacq’s spun, but he played a couple of Cookers tracks on his Radio 1 show a few years back.
MB: I get a sense that with Run Rudeboy your tongue might have been a little bit in your cheek - was that your intention?
TH: Yeah, I try not to take myself too seriously, but I also wanna make credible music. Getting that balance right is important to me.
MB: Ever thought about doing any collabs. with guest rappers?
TH: Yeah, just working on a track with Lil Rhys, a Bristol based rapper, at the moment. Always up for collaborations, and keep an ear out for interesting vocalists.
MB: What's next then?
TH: Well, the third Big Boss Man album is recorded, and due for release at the end of the year. We’ve just started work on the new Coffin Nails album, hope to get that out by October. And, working on a couple of new Hawk tunes, one of which has a rather funky break beat you may recognize. Then I should have enough Hawk material to release an album, again, later in the year.
MB: Also, I've got to ask but what's the story behind the name 'The Hawk'? You've got a Big Boss Man track named after you, after all.
TH: Hahah…well originally, the name came about because I had a hair cut which made me resemble the half-man, half-bird character ‘Hawk' from Buck Rogers. The name kinda developed into meaning something else, but that’s another story…… Actually the BBM song ‘The Hawk’ got it’s name partly from that, but also because of BBMs big influences and Hammond organ guru Alan Hawkshaw.
MB: The last word is yours. Anything you want to say?
TH: Word to your mama…
