G LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE – Peace, Love & Happiness – 2008 – Single review
RATING: 4/5
Peace, Love and Happiness? I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “Here he is again with his bluesy hip-hop mumblings and some well-meaning but ultimately lightweight irie–surfer bollocks. This’ll be one for all those lazy bastards snoozing barefooted in their hammocks waiting for the swell to come up so they can – like – wax their stick.” Well, maybe, but sometimes I kind of like that. This one’s a loud summery jam that’s got the hooks, the usual loose and organic funky percussion, squalling organs and guitar, bongos – and G’s strangled vocals but – hey – and here’s the newness – G’s actually – like – a bit political on this one. Only a little bit though – towards the end - “I can’t eat this daily bread when everybody’s starvin’/ How come those presidents just build more bombs when they should start disarming”. Go G. By the way – this was allegedly released on 20 May though G’s various web sources (including himself) obviously didn’t feel the need to give out peripheral details like release date or where you could actually buy it. Actually there’s not much point now as the LP’s out next week and it sounds pretty damn good.
Out now. Good luck finding it.
