HHB RADIO.COM – The Mix CD Volume 3 – 2007 – Review
HIGHLIGHTS: Too many to mention here - see review and also track list beneath
SOUNDBITE: “Hey yo! What the fuck is this? Oi! Lunatrix! Come on man!”
RATING: 4.5/5

The self-styled (if you’re gonna go, go large) UK’s number one online radio station deliver the third in a series here and it’s hard to find fault with. Basically the headz involved have cherry-picked what they consider to be the cream of the current UK hip hop scene whether they be high profile or not. This is 1.2 hours long, featuring 27 tracks and no, it doesn’t get boring. DJ First Aid, Million Dan, MCD and Rodney P will have you on the dancefloor with the full phat ‘rerub’ of Devon Cream – a track whose relationship to the original recalls that of Mr Hyde to Dr Jekyll – and Klashnekoff also wants more than a head-nod off you on the heavy My Life. If you're partial to moody introspection try Nemesis and Arrogance’s Change Your Heart, Foreign Beggars and Dudley Perkins To Be a Memory or Blak Twang’s (yes blud, they’re all on here, trust me!) Help Dem Lord. Even then, this still leaves ample room for vicious battle raps (Kyza’s Shots Of Smirnoff), ‘horrorcore’ (Mudmouth and (against type) Ralph Rip Shit on Circus In The Cemetery) and quality old school turntablism from both Jabba Tha Kut and the HHB Leeds crew – Analogue, Sinical, Mike D and Etch. And that's not even half the acts on what is all in all a top drawer selection from DJs Lunatrix and Vokal. Having said that, while the quality of the tracks is in no doubt, as a mix it can come across as a bit intense at times with lighter moments thin on the ground. This isn't to say there isn't the occasional laugh because there is – notably on the (presumably staged - but none the worse for all that) skit when Lunatrix throws together an 'inspired' scratch 'montage' of various versions of Walking On Sunshine (including one by Snuff?) following the Shameless track Walk On Sunshine to the obvious disgust of all present before (to equally obvious relief) dropping Bigga’s massive Beg, Steal Or Borrow - surely a contender for best use of an accordion loop ever…Also, while I doubt I’ll be thanked for describing Izzy G’s hosting as school-of-Westwood, hopefully when I say that his Fairytale is both wicked and funny as fuck (which it is) that’ll hopefully take away any sting in the previous comment. And then of course there’s the phonecall wind-up skit at the end – but I’ll leave you to discover at that one. Oh yeah – one more thing – why wasn’t Rup on this?
