Nas - all eyes on the gold chain to replace those plastic beads
NAS: Hip Hop Is Dead (2007) Single review
RATING: 4/5
Nas reanimates the flabby corpse of the mainstream resulting in what sounds a little like something from the early nineties golden age. Funky b-line, sturdy kick and snare, rock guitars and the Apache break awakened from its retirement home doze for a bar or two. Then there's also the rich irony at the mainstream admitting it's reached an inspirational dead end and releasing the sort of record that has characterised much of the underground sound for more than a decade, tempered by the bitter taste of the knowledge that this record alone will make Nas more money than most underground bands have seen in their entire careers. There's no justice is there?
Out now.
