BOOTY FRUIT: Cherry Bombs Vol. 2 (2014)

It’s about time! The three-track Vol. 2 of Booty Fruit‘s new series, Cherry Bombs will be lobbed into the wild next week and both Roast Beatz and El Bomba are back for a second bite at the – er – cherry with Father Funk completing the trio. RB gets to pop this drop’s – ahem – cherry with the Ripple-ing bounce of Back 2 Funk and is followed by El Bomba who’s in and out and running about with…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

VARIOUS: Cloud Watching Volume 3 (Riddim Fruit) (2013)

Google ‘cloud watching’ (like I just did) and you’ll probably find that the first search result is the Cloud Appreciation Society (‘Uniting cloud lovers around the world’) who are, “fighting the banality of blue sky thinking.” Unsure whether this was some sort of joke or whether there really are people apart from meteorologists out there that interested in clouds I had a quick tour around the site and frankly, results were inconclusive. Not so with Cloud Watching Volume 3, the usually dancefloor-oriented Riddim Fruit label’s annual attempt to fight the banality of downtempo compilations. Billa …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

SCOUR RECORDS: Scoured Cream Vol. 3 (2013)

Third time’s the charm as Vol. 3 of Scoured Cream wobbles all the way to the bank not to mention, on past form, all the way to the top of Juno’s breakbeat chart, if that hasn’t happened already. It wouldn’t be a Scour release if it began without a glitch though and this one is no exception as J-Sound steps up with the swinging Glitch Up Funk Right which encapsulates the retro wobble flavour running through this release like words through a stick of Cornish rock. The Hong Kong Ping Pong…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

BOOTY FRUIT: Cherry Bombs Vol. 1 (2013)

The latest installment of fruity booty from the Booty Fruit crew is the first in their new series (Cherry Bombs Vol. 1) which sees them lobbing four mashed-up hip-hop bangarangers right atcha. Far be it from them to launch the newness without recruiting the heavyweights though and so it is that Breakbeat Paradise label owner Badboe signs up for booty duty along with the UK’s Roast Beatz and Waggles and Booty Fruit men themselves, El Bomba & Hidden Riddim. Boe’s up first and certainly isn’t playing himself with what …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

TREMENDO: Dirty Funk Vol. 1 (2012)

That the raison d’etre of Vol. 1 of this new series (i.e. Dirty Funk) on Telephunken‘s Tremendo label seems to be to put the funk back into ghetto funk will come as no end of relief to those who were wondering if that ‘f’ word was (with honourable exceptions) becoming as redundant as the ‘funky’ in ‘funky’ house always has been. It opens with Trotter & Telephunken getting all stank with the seventies – a theme continued to equal party effect by Jayl Funk while DJ Soo & Tim Livingstone (egg-)roll the years back to the sixties because they ain’t just checking any funk sources, they’re checking M&S Band funk sources. Next …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

EL BOMBA: Cop Dat Shit (2012)

Hot on the heels of Basement Freaks’ Gold Digga is another breaks/ ghetto funker that pares an old hip-hop vocal hook down to its hookiest part though in this case the artist is El Bomba and the hook invites us to “Cop Dat Shit.” That’s ‘invite’ in the Mafia sense of course since, by the time you hear the words “cop dat shit,” you’ve already been ‘copping’ a minute of throbbing buzzsaw bassquake. Possibly I shouldn’t have listened to this with a ...READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

JOHNNYPLUSE feat. MC COPPA: Never Get Old (2012)

Never Get Old is the second single off Johnnypluse’s forthcoming LP and finds him laying down a bedrock of fat breaks over which he juxtaposes what sounds like a gathering swarm of bees with a sweet piano hook while the ever-reliable MC Coppa ponders the shit life throws at you and delivers life-affirming couplets. Remixes come in the shape of the dark and bleepy …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

BOOTY FRUIT: Proper Produce Vol. 2 (2012) + The Allergies ‘Remember’ video

Did you know Little Richard once sang about ‘good booty’ in the original lyrics to Tutti Frutti? No? Well anyway – here’s some more. Good booty that is – and it’s out today. Booty Fruit label men El Bomba & Hidden Riddim fiddle with Blues Project sample action on Fluteski while The Allergies (aka filth-hound DJ Moneyshot and his homie Rackabeat) re-feel Blueboy’s Remember Me and lob in…READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

VARIOUS: Cloud Watching (Riddim Fruit) (2012) – Free download
Known for its adventures in the realm of bass music, the Riddim Fruit label crosses the threshold of the chill-out room with Cloud Watching – as if you’d expect anything else from a cover depicting a bloke stood on a hill staring at a paisley-ish sky or a hippy title like that, anyway. If this leads you feeling like we’ve entered nineties downtempo breaks territory you’d be right. And wrong. Firstly, unlike the majority of nineties …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM

BOOTY FRUIT presents: Homemade Bullets Volume 3 (2011)
Homemade bullets? It’s all about the casting, the priming, the charging…the constant threat of it all blowing up in your face…Still, none of this is really an issue for Cut La Vis, El Bomba or Tonic & Funkanizer who’ve been slaving away in their audio bunkers crafting dancefloor ammunition in the shape of this digital four-tracker. …READ FULL POST @ MONKEYBOXING.COM
