RANDOM ERA – The Searching Years EP – 2007 – EP review
TRACKS: Pull Yer Pants Up – Yes Kidda – Pull Yer Pants Up (instr.) – Feel Time – Body Move – Feel Time (instr.)
SOUNDBITE: “You’ve never left Liverpool, no wonder you’re vexed/ Your arse is freezing, pull up your keks”
RATING: 4/5

Pull Yer Pants Up kicks off with a stop-starty break crisper than a sun-dried cum-sock, adds stabs of bass sax and sees Scouse MCs Philly Wiz and Ash The Gent hilariously get their hackles up about low slung jeans whilst simultaneously issuing an open challenge from right out on UK hip-hop’s margins for anyone to put something better together. Sounds like fighting talk to me but the whole EP packs the muscle to back it. Second track Yes Kidda employs a stilted Sly-Stone-alike-guitar funk riff platform for self-referential meanderings while Feel Time is way more laid back exploration about ‘slowing the flow’ and Body Move drops the funk-based breaks entirely for a dub groove and stoned lyrics. If I have any quibble at all it is that the vocals could have been lower in the mix – especially on the first track. That said - this should do for Scally hip-hop what Aspects’ Correct English did for the West Country and Goldie Lookin Chain for Wales. In other words - put it firmly on the map – not because it’s an amusing regional novelty but because it’s amusing and very good.
Out now on Go Wise Recordings.
